No matter how careful YOU are to protect yourself against identity theft, you alone cannot prevent it.  Your personal information is irretrievably stored in hundreds, if not thousands of file cabinets, computer files
and databases of everyone you've ever worked for or done business with.

You have no control over the safeguarding practices used by every business, utility company, municipality, state and Federal agency, doctor/dentist/optometrist office, hospital, insurance company, bank/credit

Take Stock

Know what personal information you have on your computers. Do you have sales reps, techs and other employees using laptop computers outside the office?  Do each one of those laptops have encryption software on them?

One of the top reported causes of data breaches is lost or stolen laptops.  How are your employees safeguarding their laptops outside of the office?

Scale Down

If you don't have a legitimate business need for sensitive personally identifying information, don't keep it.  In fact, don't even collect it.  If you have a legitimate business need for the information, keep it only as long as it's necessary.

Take time to explain the rules to your staff and train them to spot
security vulnerabilities.  Periodic training emphasizes the importance you place on meaningful data security practices.  A well trained workforce is the best defense against identity theft and data breaches.
